…with hair breakage.
I’m not sure if it’s the endless years of trying to dye my hair “Britney Spears” and “Jessica Simpson” blonde, or the years of blow drying and then flat ironing my hair, but all I know is, I can grab the bottom of my hair and pieces easily break off. Yeahhhh that’s not good.
So I did a little research, and here are some anti-breakage tips that I’m going to try. Maybe you could try them with me?
1. Use sulfate-free shampoo/conditioner. I already use Ken Paves Self Help Shampoo and Conditioner (along with hairspray, etc) because it’s sulfate free and has CoQ-10 in it to strengthen my hair. It’s helped a lot, but of course, I’m trying to reverse YEARS of damage. When I’m done shampooing and conditioning, I quickly rinse my hair with cold water to close the hair shaft to reduce frizz.
2. Squeeze (not rub) wet hair with a towel. Rubbing hair tangles your hair even more AND creates frizz. Can we vow to ONLY squeeze or scrunch our hair with a towel?
3. Use a heat protectant before using a hair dryer/flat iron. Do any of you have suggestions? I have the Chi one but for some reason it makes my hair feel crispy. Using a heat protector can help you have less damage when styling your hair, so this is important.
4. Use a split end sealer between trims. I’m trying to grow my hair out, but there’s no use in that if I have huge split ends. I regularly get trims (about every 2 months or so when I get highlights), but in between that time, I’m using Carol’s Daughter Split End Sealer. I got it from Klout several months ago, and I love it. It’s got a great smell, and I really see a reduction in my split ends. I’m thinking about purchasing their hair mask to try too.
5. One word- biotin. Last month I bought biotin vitamins for my hair to try to strengthen it. The problem? They’re like HORSE pills. I have heard AMAZING things about it though, so I’m going to suck it up and take my pills for more than 2 days. Hopefully I can get into the habit so my hair can grow strong and long!
So what do y’all think? Think I can solve my problem?
If you’ve got breakage, I hope you’ll try these tips/tricks out with me! Also, if you have tips/tricks YOU do to prevent breakage, please share them! Everyone benefits here 😉
I have the same problem sometimes. I definitely think flat ironing is the main reason for mine, because I don’t color my hair. You can also put coconut oil on your hair about 20 minutes before you shower, and that helps. 🙂 Oh! And my hairdresser said she doesn’t like the Chi spray because it has too much alcohol in it, which will definitely dry out your hair more. I still use it because I have to finish the bottle I have, but she suggested switching to Kenra’s heat protector.

I have the same exact problem! I haven’t found a heat protectant spray I like either, because my hair is so baby-fine that any type of product makes it feel gunked up and nasty! I have some biotin pills but I have cut them in half and only take a half of one each day. Good luck!

Do a protein treatment on your hair! The reason your hair is so brittle is because it lacks protein. This is very common with us blondies 🙂 I use Joico K-Pak Reconstructor. You can find it at Ulta. It has done wonders for my over processed hair.
ha ha my hair is just like yours! I also have gone from bleach blonde to red to dark brown to blonde again (and that was in ONE YEAR)! I use the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi line! It works wonders for dry hair! My hair is really thick and gets a TON of split ends but this line has helped with it! I also use Carol’s Daughter deep repair mask (WONDERFUL). My hair has gotten thicker and more unruly over the past year but these are the ones that work for me 🙂 I also just pat my hair and it does help a lot and make sure you don’t brush it when wet (pick it out). Good luck!
I always use Argan oil on my hair. I hate those yucky-feeling heat-protectant sprays!

Those sound like good steps to take!
Mine has been breaking pretty bad this winter, because of a perm I got a couple years ago,
highlights I got last summer, and all the flat ironing!
Sounds like you’re doing everything you can, with the exception of going cold turkey on bleach and hair tools!

ugh I get horrible split ends too, and it’s only been happening the last year or so that i’ve noticed! I barely ever use heat on my hair anymore too soit’s weird. probably from having it up too much! let me know if anything works 😉 I’ve tried hair, skin & nails vitamins (with biotin in them) and saw no difference but may work better for you. good luck!

I’ve knowsn a few friends and currently my stepdaughter who have this problem. The culprit is definitely the FLAT IRON and also dying it a lot. None of the girls I know have learned their lesson and just let their hair be. We tell my stepdaughter she is going to end up with hair so short like her mom because of all the damage she does to it.
Try not usin a flat iron everday.

Not rubbing your hair with a towel and using heat protectant before you do anything with heat will help a lot!! But seriously, just leaving your hair alone is the best thing you can do for it. Straightening, curling, and blowdrying cause the most damage (as well as bleaching). I rarely do any of those, and I can grow out my hair for 6 or 8 months without a trim and still not have any split ends. Pretty much all of the things that we do to our hair to be ‘in style’ are the worst things we can do! Oh well. I work in hair, so every day I color and curl and blowdry other people’s hair, but I won’t let anyone do that to me!

I dye and highlight my hair all the time. I’m 54 with lots of grey, so I have to do my roots every 3 to 4 weeks. You have some great suggestions. I do use the John Freida Hair Repair spray and also the shampoo and conditioner. I switch also to a macadamia nut shampoo and conditioner. I also use moraccian oil. I have a blog with a blog hop called Wednesdays Adorned From Above Blog Hop and it runs through tonight and will start again on Wednesday. I would love to have you share this post and any others with everyone at the party. Here’s the link to the party.

if social bookmarking gets you a bunch of targeted visitors?
I’ve been considering doing some bookmarking for a few of my sites but wasn’t sure if it would generate any positive results.
Thank you.

I’m interested in a high grade WP theme, however I don’t know how to know if the one I
choose will be compatible with mobile phones. What are some guidelines you can give me as to what to look for with
regards to colors and background and details like that?
I generally look at websites via my Galaxy III, and I’m going to wager that a lot of folks are like me in that way. Oops, i went a bit off topic, sorry. Appreciated the blog post thou.
