1. I got to spend 5 days with my family back in Corpus this past week. Seeing my family was MUCH overdue and I was so glad to have spent as much time as we could there.

2. As y’all know, my parents got me the Maskcara IIID Foundation HAC Pack for Christmas! It was the really big thing on my list, so it made me really happy.

3. Mathew and I not only got to have a late Christmas with my family, but we spent New Year’s Eve with them as well! We had a great time at my aunt’s house playing trivia games, watching football, eating yummy food, and my favorite part…making bunuelos. Bunuelos are balls of dough stretched out super thin until they’re practically see through. Then, they are fried in oil and covered with cinnamon sugar. It’s my favorite part of New Years because all the ladies just sit around, talk, and try to make the best looking one!

4. Mathew and I started working out again and are beginning the process of clean eating. I’ll be talking more about our journey with clean eating and even giving y’all some fun recipes from one of my favorite websites, which I can’t wait to do! Although yesterday was only day 1, I’m happy to say that it was a success.

5. I was inspired by a fellow blogger and Instagrammer to take a picture every day for the year and use a hashtag to document it. I’d love if you all followed my hashtag on Instagram– #VMWeveryday2014. Let’s hope I can keep it up for all 365 days!

1. My car STILL isn’t done and I wrecked it in October. I’m dying to have it back!

2. Our only working car went kaput on us this week and so we are even MORE in dire need for crappy #1! We would absolutely love your prayers or thoughts to just get through this hard time. It’s not easy having ZERO vehicles.

Now it’s your turn to link up! Tell us about the Happies and Crappies from your week!

Betrayed By Makeup: Putting Your Best Face Forward

Makeup. We all wear it. It’s a part of our every day routine.

When I put on makeup in the mornings during the work week, I usually halfway do it with blush, highlighter, shadow, mascara, and lipstick. When it’s the weekend (or let’s face it, a blogger meet up) I put on foundation, actually contour my shadow, fill in my brows, use concealer, put on blush and 2 DIFFERENT highlighters, wing out my gel eyeliner, carefully pick out the perfect shade of lipstick, and on some occasions- put on some falsies.

Because I want to put my best “face” forward.

Sometimes even Mathew will be shocked when I put on a full face of makeup. I’ll get remarks from him like “Ooh! You’re actually going to put on makeup today!?” (Um, I wear makeup EVERYday, but thanks…) and “Wow! You look AMAZING!” It’s funny what a little makeup can do. That’s what I thought at least, when I saw the following picture last night on Facebook through a friend’s page from an MSN article:

What a transformation some makeup and a curling iron can do, huh? Well, makeup and hair from a PROFESSIONAL. Her hair looks flawless, as does her skin (with a perfectly chiseled nose and chin), she’s got falsies, lined and glossed lips, and perfectly filled brows. This set of photos has sparked tons of controversy with men saying that “makeup is a betrayal” and they couldn’t imagine going to bed with the girl on the right and waking up (disappointed) to the girl on the left.

But here’s the thing: When I put on makeup…I feel sexy.

Sure, that’s what makeup companies WANT you to feel, but I do. What’s worse? I feel even sexier if I’ve paid more money for that makeup. Isn’t that weird? I claim that MAC is my second home and pride myself on actually making friends with the makeup artists (or MUAs as they like to call themselves). I pride myself into walking into Sephora and paying $30 for a brow highlighter because it’s going to “revolutionize my makeup routine” or “make my brows look perfect.” It’s pretty ridiculous….but I feed into it. Why? Because the makeup and beauty industry are multi-million dollar corporations. It’s their JOB to make me feel that way (and they do a darn good job doing it too). So when I put on a full face of makeup I feel sexy and ready to tackle the day. Do I feel like I’m betraying my husband (or other men/women) because I put on makeup? No. Is that my intention? No.

I was curious- I asked Mathew his thoughts on the pictures and if he felt “betrayed” by the difference. His answer? Yes. Yes!? All I could think in my head was, “Hey mister! I may look plain at home and when I go out may want to doll up. Am  betraying you!?” My head was reeling. Then I started to understand his point of view, and could see where he was coming from. Granted, this woman has on a lot of makeup (and it’s done by a professional), but still. It was interesting to see his point of view, even though I was a bit shocked at the honesty of his answer.

So here are my questions for today: What are your thoughts on this transformation? Would you feel betrayed if you married the woman on the right and woke up to the woman on the left? How do YOU feel when you put on makeup? Do you ever feel as though it’s “betraying” people?

Love The Great Gatsby? Get Inspired! (+Giveaway)

I haven’t had a chance to see the new Gatsby movie but it’s completely inspired me from the previews alone. I’m a Baz Luhrmann fan with movies like Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge, so I am excited to go see the movie this weekend. I had to watch the older version of the movie and read the book my sophomore year of high school and to be honest- I hated it, so I’m hoping that the revamped movie changes my mind like I think it will.

I started getting ideas on what I love from the commercials and here’s what I’ve got:

This blog has some great ideas on how to bring a little Great Gatsby into your life! From accessories and clothes to reading and makeup, she's got some great inspired finds!

1. Rhinestone headbands. Ever since I decided to plan my wedding back in the day, I loved rhinestone headbands. Art Deco is back and my favorite rhinestone shop (and where I got my headband for my wedding) Tessa Kim has gorgeous headbands to make you feel like Carey

2. Books. Although the actual Gatsby book failed for me in high school, I started reading a book called A Spear of Summer Grass by Deanna Raybourn. It’s kind of a mix of Gatsby and Out of Africa. It’s been a great read now that I’m done with school and actually have free time.

A Spear of Summer Grass is about the daughter of a scandalous mother, Delilah Drummond. Her latest scandal is big enough to make even her oft-married mother blanch. Delilah is exiled to Kenya and her favorite stepfather’s Savannah manor house, until gossip subsides. Amidst the wonders—and dangers—of Africa, Delilah awakes to a land out of all proportion: extremes of heat, darkness, beauty and joy that cut to her very heart. Only when this sacred place is profaned by bloodshed does Delilah discover what is truly worth fighting for—and what she can no longer live without.

3. Date Night Dress. Mathew and I don’t get to go out often because of our budget, but all of a sudden I feel like I need to wear this dress and have a night on the town! It’s not costume looking and actually looks like just a little fancy dress. I think it’s adorable. Sadly, this dress is currently out of stock so I’ll have to wait until it’s back for sale.

4. Smokey Eyes and Falsies. I’ve always loved winged eyeliner and smokey eyes. I do a subtle smokey eye during the day, and then at night I’ve been known to add some black or dark brown eyeshadow with false eyelashes to perk it up and rock out that super smokey look. My favorite lashes? Ardell for a couple bucks at the grocery store!

Gatsby is definitely taking over and is the hottest trend at the moment. Jump on it!

Speaking of jumping on it…Harlequin books & Deanna Raybourn are offering TWO readers a chance to win their own copy of A Spear of Summer Grass!

Enter to win one of two copies of Deanna Raybourn's newest Harlequin novel, A Spear of Summer Grass! It's inspired by The Great Gatsby and Out of Africa!
