Star Wars Food
One of the highlights of our Make-A-Wish trip for our daughter, Addie, was at Ronto Roasters. If you haven’t heard the story yet, I went to put our food down at a table and had my husband, Mathew waiting nearby so I could find a spot for Addie’s medical stroller. It got very crowded all of a sudden, and when I tried to get through the crowd to get to him I realized the crows was surrounding Mathew and the kids! Rey and Chewbacca had stopped to talk to them and we ended up talking to them for at least 20 minutes. It was such a special moment at Ronto Roasters! All products in this post on Zero Waste Eco-Friendly Starter Products have been gifted, however all thoughts and opinions are my own.
For the past 5 years our family has been what I call pseudo-crunchy. We use essential oils, we use medicine when needed, and we work hard to have natural products in our home for cleaning, bathing, and more. Recently, it’s been hard to find paper towels in the grocery store, and it dawned on me- why haven’t we been more zero waste and eco-friendly? We’ve always used paper towels to help minimize germs, but what about products that can allow us to do that and not create so much trash? What zero waste and eco-friendly starter products are out there that can help us jumpstart this seemingly daunting task? I did some research, found some amazing products for our family, and am sharing them all with you!
I have found so much joy and freedom in pursuing a life with less toxins, eating healthier, working out again, and now working towards a zero waste and eco-friendly lifestyle. All it takes is just starting with one thing. Once you get the hang of that switch, switch another product, and then again. Little by little the changes you make in your home will be so impactful not only for the environment, but for your health!
The Zero Waste Starter Kit
For our family, it’s always been beneficial for us to start out new ventures with some kind of kit. When I found this Zero Waste Starter Kit by SandaraStyle I knew it was the perfect way to start our zero waste and eco-friendly journey. It comes with an adorable mesh tote bag, 2 medium sized mesh produce bags, 2 muslin cotton bags, 2 bamboo toothbrushes, 2 food grade stainless steel straws (and the most amazing straw brush), 5 cotton makeup remover pads, and 1 plant based loofah sponge. Here’s why I love this Zero Waste Starter Kit– it did all the thinking for me. I started out small, going for the metal straw, fell in love with the cute mesh tote bag, and I love how there’s something for the bathrooms and the kitchen in this set. When I read that on their website one of the makeup remover pads is equivalent to 1000 pieces of a disposable pads, I was floored. This eco box literally helps with reducing excess waste in the environment. This is an incredible gift to give to someone you love. It shows that you truly care for them and their health, and that’s a fabulous thing!
Reusable Kitchen Sponges
Oh man, can our family go through sponges. I’m not sure why but especially the past few years I feel like I’ve constantly bought sponges. They get dirty and grimy and just…ew. It was so wasteful though to constantly buy sponges, so I knew it was another place we needed to make changes in our home. I love these reusable kitchen sponges from K’s Got You Covered and how cute and functional they are. Here’s why I love these reusable kitchen sponges– not only are they zero waste and eco-friendly, but they’re easy to clean. Just machine wash in cold or warm water then dry on medium heat. Just don’t use fabric softeners! I recommend grabbing at least 3- one for kitchen counters, one for the sink, and one for the bathroom! These reusable sponges have terry cloth on one side to allow for a gentle clean and a light scrubber on the other side.
Reusable Paper Towels + Scrubber Cloth
As I mentioned before, our family can go through a lot of paper towels. It’s actually quite embarrassing how many we can use in a day. Between very frequent hand washing in bathrooms and the kitchen, toddler messes, potty accidents (from the kids and the dogs), and more, we make a lot of trash. I’m always floored at how fast our trash cans fill up. In the past I bought reusable paper towels but only kept them in Addie’s room for trach care to wipe her neck. I finally was able to get my hands on several amazing reusable paper towel sets from K’s Got You Covered. For the kitchen we got a set each of whites, neutrals, and blacks and I am going to keep adding to our collection as I can afford. For the kids’ bathroom I got the Kitchen and Food prints (sounds backwards but I love all the bright colors and how they match the bathroom decor!) I find these reusable paper towels to be a very good price and an extremely great investment for moving towards a zero waste and eco-friendly lifestyle. I ended up also getting a couple of their produce bags with the intention that I’ll put the used reusable paper towels in them and then use it as a laundry bag so they don’t magically disappear with the laundry fairy. Also for the kitchen (and anywhere else in the house, truly), I thought this scrubber cloth would come in handy! I am always wasting paper towels to clean my counters and table, and so the scrubber cloth just made sense. I definitely want to get more of these to keep under my sink because there are always messes to clean and I love how it’s double-sided!
Reusable Multipurpose Towels
I don’t know about you, but when I’m in the kitchen and cooking, I’m always grabbing paper towels to wipe my hands. Crack an egg, wash my hands, cut up bacon, wash my hands, throw the egg shells, wash my hands… It’s just so many paper towels. These reusable towels are INCREDIBLE. They have a fun fabric on one side and terry cloth on the other so they’re incredibly absorbent. Don’t feel like you have to limit these reusable towels to your kitchen though- they’re wonderful for cleaning the bathroom, everyday home messes, kitchen cleanup, as guest towels, and more! You’ll want at least 4 or 5 of these zero waste and eco-friendly reusable towels for around your house- trust me.
Biodegradable Bamboo Toothbrushes
When going through the list of things I wanted to switch towards the zero waste and eco-friendly lifestyle I started to think about toothbrushes for some reason. If you haven’t thought about it, toothbrushes create so much unnecessary plastic waste. I found this great shop called Naboo that sells biodegradable toothbrushes infused with activated charcoal and got so excited! Their compostable toothbrushes have BPA free activated-charcoal coated bristles that help whiten your teeth, reduce plaque, and eliminate bad breath. These biodegradable toothbrushes were actually designed to be ergonomic in your hand for a two to three minute brush session. On top of that, they look so chic and minimalistic on bathroom counters with the toothbrush holder. If you haven’t thought about switching your toothbrush, consider this- billions of plastic toothbrushes are discarded annually, none of which will ever biodegrade. What seems like a small matter because a toothbrush is relatively small compared to other plastic waste is actually a HUGE problem.Think of how many billions of plastic toothbrushes pile up in landfills, and how some of these toothbrushes end up in the ocean endangering marine animals. If half of all toothbrush users made the switch to bamboo toothbrushes in the USA alone, it would mean that roughly 50 million tons of annual plastic toothbrush trash would reduce by 25 MILLION tons! If each of us make a switch towards biodegradable toothbrushes we could absolutely make a real impact!
Zero Waste Shaving Kit
For as long as I can remember I’ve always cringed at the price of razors and their replacement blade cartridges when I’ve gone into the grocery store. Why are they so expensive?! I figured it was time once and for all to take the plunge and switch to a zero waste and eco-friendly alternative, and stumbled upon this Zero Waste Shaving Kit Set from Eco Roots Shop. Here’s why I’m obsessed with this shaving kit set– It comes with one rose gold double-edged safety razor, organic shaving soap, and 15 high-quality stainless steel replacement blades. I was a bit nervous to use this razor at first, but holy moly- it’s incredible. I literally had to make a single pass on my legs and I could hear the razor shaving the hair off. The organic soap (with citrus and lavender notes enriched with shea and cocoa butter) helped the blade glide so smoothly that I didn’t get one nick or cut, despite how incredibly sharp it is. Mathew has already tried to steal it from me, which means it looks like he will be getting his own shaving kit set for Father’s Day, no lie. This razor will help you to save money in the long run and reduce your waste. Not to mention it’s plastic-free, zero-waste, and comes in recyclable packaging. Win, win!
I’m curious- which on this zero waste and eco-friendly list are you grabbing first?
I hope you’ll join me in striving towards making our planet greener and just being less wasteful in general. We have been given such an opportunity in our lives right now to truly evaluate how we want to live, and I think all of these products truly help towards an amazing first step. Want to move towards a toxin-free lifestyle? Check out more on Young Living Essential Oils or message me on social media so we can chat on how to get you switched!
We’ve been doing some online shopping lately with some gift cards and birthday money and it was requested that I put all my fun finds here! Everything we’ve bought for this Amazon + Target Find in April is super practical (I always back out of buying non-practical things for no reason whatsoever- even if it’s more of a need than want) and I think everyone will love them! I love shopping at Amazon and Target because my orders can be sent directly to my house, or with Target I can choose to do online order pickup in my car. If you’re in need of some great finds specifically for kids, check out these indoor energy burning toys and these outdoor energy burning toys. They’re all incredible!
The Amazon Finds
1| Weighted Blanket– At Christmas it seemed like just about everyone in our family got a weighted blanket– except me. It’s no one’s fault that I didn’t ask for one, but that’s because it’s a gift I didn’t even know I needed… until now. Mathew snagged this weighted blanket for me earlier this month to make sure it’d be here on time for Mother’s Day and when it arrived I had to try it for a moment before he put it away to wrap. It’s amazing, has a gorgeous quilting pattern, and is such great quality. I got the 15 lb 60×80 (queen size) and it’s just perfect.2| 6 foot iPhone Cords– I’m not sure why, but our last iPhone cords didn’t last long at all. I went back to an iPhone cord I bought a couple years ago that lasted forever and bought two of them for us. The cable helps so it never frays, and I love that they’re long so I don’t have to sit so closely to a plug! I will never buy another brand of iPhone cord.3| His and Hers Silicone Rings- Mathew and I have been working out more and I have a nickel allergy which requires me to get my wedding ring re-dipped once a year or else I have a massive rash stay on it for months. Mathew got a great silicone ring set for himself that he can alternate according to his mood for working out, and he chose this beautiful silver metallic trio set for me so I’m not all itchy while I wait for jewelry stores to reopen.4| Splash Pad– I told you all in the outdoor toys post how incredible this thing is. We snagged it with some of Lawson’s birthday money (thanks Aunt Marylynn!) and it seriously was the best purchase ever. I‘m not lying. There is no inflating required and that is a blessing for dads all around the world! Just hook it up to a hose on low, let it fill the outer ring with water, then adjust the water flow to change the sprinkler part of the splash pad. Best part is, putting away is just as easy and took all of 2 minutes to do. Lawson loved it, my husband wasn’t grumbling about putting it together, and I was happy that Lawson got all his energy out.5| Magic Dishwashing Gloves–I’ve been trying to put together what I want to give my mom for Mother’s Day. She is super practical and enjoys things she uses that make life easier. When I saw these, I knew she needed them. My mom always got her nails done pre-quarantine, and had dishwashing gloves so her mani would last longer, but how neat are these?! These Magic Dishwashing Gloves have built in scrubbies so you don’t have to worry about nasty bacteria-filled sponges! I’m putting some more things together for her but I couldn’t resist snagging them for her gift basket.
The Target Finds
6| Black Box Fan– If you’ve converted your garage into a home gym like I have, you’ll definitely want this. I love that this black box fan comes in a large size so I feel a lot of air, and it has 3 speeds. Perfect for my garage and my workouts have been much more pleasant since. Thankful it is so powerful and a really cheap price!7| Kinetic Sand Beach Sand Kingdom– I’ve loved Kinetic Sand for years. As a former teacher I used it at my table for lessons with my students, and now as a mom I love it with Lawson and Addie because it doesn’t make a mess like regular sand. Kinetic Sand is great for sensory activities and is just downright fun. We grabbed the Beach Sand Kingdom kit with the last of Lawson’s birthday money (thanks Granny!) because everything can stay in it’s box. It’s large enough for playing, comes with several tools, and has 3 lbs of kinetic sand in it. Nothing better than that!8| Kid and Adult Forks– I don’t know about you guys, but there’s a fork thief among us. Somehow, somewhere, at some point in time someone has hidden my forks. I was down to 4 out of a set of 12! I bought 8 of these Teagan forks to get us back to 12 and I’m super impressed! These are thick, heavy, and definitely great quality. Those forks are a STEAL for only $1 a piece. Lawson was in need of some quality forks too. He’s past the plastic fork phase and wants a real fork so he can stab his food properly. This Cloud Island Fork Set is a pack of 3. Handles are easy to hold and fork tines are slightly rounded so your toddler doesn’t hurt himself. They’re a hit with Lawson!9| Medallion Opal Comforter– After Lawson had a bloody nose explosion all over our bed a few months ago, I decided that a gift from a friend (who so sweetly told me to treat myself) was going to go towards a brand new comforter set. We’ve stuck with solids or more manly neutrals our whole 8 years of marriage, but Mathew and I decided to be a little wild and find one with a cool pattern. When I found this Medallion Opal Comforter I knew it was the one! It comes with the comforter, a bed skirt, 2 shams, 2 Euro shams, and 2 decorative pillows. Really super affordable too and that made me happy. It’s already on our bed and I love it!10| Jersey Sheet Set– To go along with our new comforter I had to get some sheets because ours look like a murder scene thanks to the bloody nose incident. I decided on this Jersey sheet set and have already laid in bed and melted. The sheets are SO soft and have a nice stretch so it wasn’t a workout to put the fitted sheet on the bed. The set comes with a fitted sheet, top sheet, and 2 pillow cases I got the navy and it’s PERFECT with our new comforter and is an exceptional inexpensive price.

We miss Disney World. There. I said it. Every single day we have Disney+ on for the family, play Disney music on our Alexa while we cook, dress up with our favorite Disney clothes, and we even make fun Disney recipes. There’s not a day that goes by where we don’t miss Disney. There’s so many incredible food and drinks at Disney but there’s one that never leaves my mind- Tatooine Blue Milk. I had 2 in a day when we visited Galaxy’s Edge. It was that good. Ever since our Make-A-Wish trip to Disney I have wanted to have Blue Milk again.
It’s hard not to miss Galaxy’s Edge when Rey and Chewie walk up to your daughter in the middle of Ronto Roasters and love on her. I cried so much with how special that was! Not only that, but we got to ride Rise of the Resistance the week it came out, and that was one amazing ride. To top it off, I was interrogated and it was suggested I was a rebel spy. Talk about amazing!
We’ve been home so much more lately, and I actually found out that Dole has some amazing at-home resources for families.
